bonnie and duke
my parents, bonnie and duke, got married in and moved from eugene, oregon to the san francisco bay area on july 4, 1958.
duke had come home from ww2 as a radioman in the south pacific. bonnie worked at the cosmetic counter at gerlach’s drugstore.
duke was beginning his career at sfo as a station manager for west coast airlines. bonnie did office work. they didn’t have much money but bonnie made sure their home was stylish and impeccable. they hosted dinner parties and cocktail soirees. they dressed “to the nines” as bonnie would say.
but with little money to spend on decor, bonnie started thrifting. in those days, there was a stigma to garage sales and church charity stores. but she didn’t care. she had an eye for style and little money. she knew she could make it work. and she did.
